Wellkin Child & Youth Mental Wellness provides confidential counselling services to young people (birth to 18 years of age) and their families living in Oxford and Elgin Counties at no cost.
Depending on the age and circumstances, counselling may take place with the young person, primarily with their caregivers, or may include the entire family. Other service providers within the community can also be involved in the process, if the clients are in agreement with this. Group counselling may be available depending on the particular problem and the availability of other group participants.
Reasons clients might wish to come to counselling are many and varied. These may include but are not limited to such issues as mental health concerns, depression, family violence, behavioural concerns, school or social difficulties, parent-child conflicts, internet/gaming and digital dependency, substance abuse, and issues surrounding sexuality. Wellkin will assist the client with accessing the most appropriate resources to address their needs. The therapists at Wellkin are trained professionals who have ongoing access to the consultation services of a child psychiatrist.
Counselling at Wellkin is voluntary, and while we appreciate calls from other service providers in the community (e.g. a family doctor, someone from the school, etc.), we need to hear directly from the client or family that a referral for counselling is something they wish to take part in. We encourage our clients’ active participation in directing their counselling and we always welcome input from the public on how we may be able to improve our services.
Wellkin’s drop-in clinic provides immediate access to service on Tuesdays in Woodstock and Thursdays in St. Thomas from 10am to 6pm (excluding holidays). Clinicians provide single session counselling to children, youth (0-18 years of age) and their families. Although this is a single session, you are welcome to use the drop-in clinic more than once with no appointment necessary.
The Brief Therapy Model provides timely, high-quality, client-centred service by skilled clinicians. It assumes that some children, youth, and families can and should be involved in services only for a short period of time. The brief service model shows strong clinical outcomes in client satisfaction and reducing wait times for services.
Regular office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Fridays. Evening appointments can be scheduled according to the clients’ and therapists’ schedules.
